A Study of the Correlation between Spiritual Well-being and Quality of Life in Diabetes Mellitus Patients.


Abstract
This study was designed to test the correlation between spiritual well-being and quality of life to identify this variable on quality of life.
This study was based on 102 diabetes mellitus admission patients at internal medicine of 4 university hospital in Seoul and Suwon from October 2 to November 18 in 2000.
This instruments used for this study were the Spiritual Well-bing scale (Paloutzian & Ellison, 1983) and the Quality of Life a SPSS/PC program for t-test, ANOVA, Person Correlation Coeffieients and Stepwise Multiple Regression. The results were as follows
1. The score on the spiritual well-being scale ranged from 49 to 120 with a mean of 84.51( SD 15.47).
2. The score on the quality of life scale ranged from 98 to 214 with a mean of 150.45( SD:31.24).
3. Among the demographic variables.. religion(t=2.99, P=.02), the degree of faith (F=3.64, P=.009) and Occupation (t=2.75, P=.04) were significantly seated to the spiritual well-being.
4. There were signigicant positive correlation between spiritual well-being and quality of life(r=.597, P=.0001).
5. Stepwise multiple regressin analysis showed that
1) the economic status was the main predictor and accounted for 23.24% fo the total variance.
2) age and occupatio accounted for an additional 12.89% of the total variance. Therefore, in order to increase the quality of life it might be helpful to provide them with spiritual well-being intervention program.
